Exquisite flintlock turn off pocket pistol by Brasher
This exquisite little turnoff pocked pistol was manufactured circa 1790 by John Brasher (1758-1836).
John Brasher was a quality gunmaker who had shops in Birmingham and London and was renowned for his large bore pistols in contrast to this piece.
Clearly commissioned for a person of substance the pistol’s walnut butt is decorated with silver filigree inlay and features a silver (vacant) escutcheon. The pistol is mechanically as sound as the day it was made with a strong spring. The “waterproof” pan is protected from loss of priming powder or accidental discharge by a lever safety, very necessary if carried loaded in a pocket or ladies muff.
The barrel unscrews as it should and is stamped with London proof marks with the lock engraved with “London” on one panel and “Brasher” on the other.
Flintlock pocket pistols are not uncommon but to find one of this quality and state of preservation is unusual. A superb little pistol.
